Lindsay has promoted MD MEP‘s specialized programs and services—such as apprenticeship programs and free educational resources—in the regional media to help our local manufacturers grow their workforces and improve their processes.

Recently, HFAM president Joseph DeMattos was named a 2020 Leader in Health Care by the Baltimore Business Journal for his leadership and guidance in senior care during the pandemic. Lindsay wrote and submitted the nomination for this prestigious award—which helped ensure that Joe’s outstanding work did not go unnoticed.

A D&Ay to Remember: The Beginning of Devaney & Associates

The year was 1991. Diane Devaney tightened her grip on the steering wheel of her Toyota Corolla, waiting for the light to turn green. In 20 minutes, the FedEx office at BWI airport would close, meaning the artwork resting on her backseat would not make it in time to her client the following day. Finally, the light turned green and she floored it, the city of Baltimore disappearing in her rearview mirror.

One year before, Diane had sat at a table at Dalesio’s of Little Italy with her husband and another couple, Fritz and Beth Stratan. The Stratans, who owned a student travel agency, AESU, were one of Diane’s biggest clients. When the coffee came, the Stratans reluctantly announced that, while they loved working with Diane, the agency she currently worked for was charging too much. They were taking their business elsewhere.

That announcement sparked a very important conversation: “What if Diane started her own agency with their help?”

As reluctantly as the Stratans broached the subject, Diane accepted their offer. The Stratans gave her $10,000, plus enough to cover her salary for 10 months, and allowed her to work out of the AESU office, which covered most of her overhead. Devaney & Associates, Inc., was born.

Among the agency’s first clients were Health Care for the Homeless, St. Vincent de Paul (a leading provider of community services to people suffering from the effects of hunger, homelessness, and poverty in Baltimore), the Maryland Department of Agriculture, and, of course, AESU.

“It’s always been about what works for the client,” says Diane, looking back on that time period, which defined the agency’s ethos. “Putting the client first is putting yourself first.”

Diane’s other priority? Hiring good people. Hard workers who worked well together were her key to success. Right off the bat, Diane hired a graphic designer so she could spend more time tracking down leads and generating new business. This paid off when, after a year in business, Devaney & Associates turned a profit and was able to move into an unassuming office building in The Village of Cross Keys, where Diane’s golden retriever, Chardonnay, maintained a permanent residence.

Diane knew then that Devaney & Associates was going places. But on that cold November day in 1991, she only had her belief in herself to guide her. The front door of FedEx was locked, so she drove around back to the loading dock and parked, grabbing the artwork and hoisting herself onto the dock. She ducked under the overhead door, which had been left partially open.  A FedEx worker she knew saw her and took the package. She thanked him and climbed down to her car, driving home with a loose grip on the steering wheel.

Devaney & Associates Earns a Silver Success in 2020 Davey Awards

Devaney & Associates was named a Silver Award Winner in the 2020 Davey Awards for its creative collaboration on the Carroll Hospital “Better Together” wall. The annual International Davey Awards honor the achievements of small, creative companies who thrive off of big ideas, rather than unlimited budgets.

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the hospital’s leadership team reached out to D&A with an exciting request. They wanted to display their appreciation for their overworked staff who had put their lives at risk to care bravely for the hospital’s patients and provide a positive outlet that would showcase the hospital’s unity and strength.

Devaney & Associates’ creative team worked quickly and efficiently (with a tight deadline of two weeks and having to follow all COVID-19 protocols) to transform a dull wall in Carroll Hospital’s lobby into an interactive masterpiece.

Overall, the wall represents some of the core principles of Carroll Hospital: teamwork, resilience, and innovation.

Devaney & Associates received Best of Show honors at the 2020 National Mature Media Awards for our work with Edenwald Senior Living’s Resident Recruitment Campaign. The campaign was 1 of only 5 entries to secure this highest honor, and the sole winner in the Marketing and Advertising Campaign category. This year’s Best of Show winners included:

Breaking Down the Edenwald Resident Recruitment Campaign

In January 2019, the leadership at Edenwald, a continuing care retirement community in Towson, conducted an analysis of their marketing, and how it was impacting resident recruitment.

Past tactics were not delivering the results that the Edenwald team had hoped for, so they reached out to Devaney & Associates in an effort to make a change. Together, we discovered that they were not capitalizing on some of their best sales and marketing tools, including their Constant Contact database, event invites, and social media pages to recruit new residents. Working with Edenwald’s leadership and sales team, Team D&A established the following goals for future campaigns:

  •  Raise awareness for Edenwald with seniors in Towson and surrounding areas
  • Increase interest and inquiries from potential residents
  •  Reengage the “active lead” base—prospects who has previously inquired about Edenwald
  •  Increase monthly event attendance
  •  Grow Edenwald’s Facebook audience to increase inquiries and awareness

High-Quality Solutions Deliver Impressive Results

After hearing from Edenwald leadership about their concerns with current marketing tactics, Team D&A got to work on a monthly marketing schedule that would engross the senior audience—including those who were unfamiliar with Edenwald and individuals who had previously inquired about their community. The campaign was centered around direct, personalized communication, including:

  • Maintaining the client’s event postcards each month, but with new, distinctive themes that spoke to the senior audience, followed by emails to Edenwald’s active lead list in Constant Contact
  • Deploying emails with digital retargeting ads to more than 60,000 senior and adult children prospects
  • Running Facebook ad campaigns which promoted their events, the community, and the page
  • Creating a schedule for engaging content to post on social media, and maintaining the page with frequent posts

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the client and our marketing team, the recruitment campaign brought interested individuals to Edenwald’s front door; with promoted events reaching capacity, a 171% increase in the Edenwald Facebook audience, and a 96% occupancy rate.

About the 2020 National Mature Media Awards

The awards program, presented by the Mature Market Resource Center, recognizes the nation’s uppermost marketing, communications, educational materials, and programs designed and produced for those in the senior community. This year’s entries were reviewed by a renowned panel of experts from across the country. Entries were scored with a rating scale of 1 to 100, and were judged based on overall content, quality of design, creativity, and significance relating to the senior market.
